Trains for faraway Richmond thunder over ancient brick bridges, beneath which derelict pubs and nests of shambling terraces rub alongside warehouses of modern goods: bathroom fittings, car supplies, organic mush. Lost Russian builders wander in packs wearing orange jackets and hard helmets, puzzled newcomers waiting for vans that never show up, dwarfed by overhanging tower blocks and mountains of gravel...”
