On 23rd August 1979 a drab middle-aged salesman scooted out of the afternoon drizzle into an empty public house in a small market town in Sussex carrying a tray of egg fried rice and sat on a ripped stool at the dimly-lit bar. The barmaid - seventeen, blonde, bags under her eyes, wearing a floral print dress and blue apron, sucked on a cigarette and nodded.
―You can‘t bring them in here.
Her accent was that of a many-generation local. The stranger, a commercial traveller down on his luck, pulled a puzzled face. He had several teeth missing and his once-luxuriant hair was beginning to recede but he still had the air of someone who knows, or at least believes, he has some strange power over the opposite sex.
―Bring what in where?
