#MilitantFactionsQuotes 36: He climbed twenty-three dusty cement steps to the main entrance

#MilitantFactionsQuotes 36:

“Reaching the Victorian building with its mock-turrets, its Georgian facades, its blinded windows, he climbed twenty-three dusty cement steps to the main entrance, wheezing, lungs sore, metal pricking his calloused palms. Reaching the top step he turned and looked out on the high street for the first time since he’d retired: it was almost empty despite the hour, the charity shops closing and pedestrians too scared to linger longer than was necessary to strip the pound shop shelves. The sun gave the rooftops a final yellow lick: turning, he inserted the master.”

-From "Midnight Hollow", published in the "Still" anthology (Negative Press, 2015), and one of the stories in Mark Piggott's fiction/non-fiction collection "Militant Factions" available in paperback or Kindle from Amazon.
