The previous St George’s Day, a ninety-something who’d saved the lives of his comrades when their ship was torpedoed on its way to Arkhangelsk made the error of draping a union flag from his balcony. The police and local authority had taken the view that this might cause racial unrest and he was promptly evicted, though no charges were eventually brought, due to the old war-hero stuff. Inexplicably, the council’s actions had done little to ease simmering racial tensions in the area.
