Jim had to hand over the money he'd put aside for Ingrid's birthday, which was inconvenient; but then, as the loan-shark helpfully explained, that was tough. Jim checked his wallet: sadly, after paying off an instalment, buying the dodgy Shell flowers (the Laotian had gone on holiday) and three bottles of Echo Beach for a tenner, there was very little left.
While he waited for Ingrid to return with Sian, Jim thought about his dreadful day: about the endless humiliations he seemed to suffer at the hands of people without "A" levels. Frankly, Jim had had enough. One day a mighty rain was going to come and wash all the dirt and the scum off the streets. Until that day came it was Jim’s turn to take out the trash.
Rooting round in the washing basket, Jim emerged with a pair of tights.
