Letter about plastic bullets in today's Times

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 11:15 AM

Somehow or other, another letter of mine found its way onto the Times letters page today:

“I would be interested on what evidence Richard Kemp bases his assertion that plastic bullets are “non-lethal” (“comment”, 10 August). In Northern Ireland they have been responsible for a number of deaths; I still recall hearing a moving speech by Emma Groves, who was blinded by a British soldier in 1971 when he fired through the window of her home. When I visited Belfast in the late 1980s I was given one of these ghastly devices as a souvenir and would suggest anyone calling for them to be fired blindly into crowds inspect one at close quarters first.”
